Already Use Salesforce at Work? How to Turn It Into a Higher-Paying Job
You enter data, run reports, click around like it’s second nature. And somewhere along the way it hits you: “someone gets paid a lot more than I do to actually build and manage this thing. Why not me?”
Yes! Why not you?! This post shows you exactly how to turn the Salesforce experience you already have into a higher-paying certified Salesforce admin role, including why your head start is bigger than you think, and the steps to make the jump.
By the end, you’ll know how to go from Salesforce end user to certified Salesforce admin. And you’ll see that you’re way ahead of the game and closer to certification than you know.
Can you turn your Salesforce experience into a higher-paying job?
Yes. If you already use Salesforce at work, you have a real head start toward getting certified and landing a higher-paying admin role. The learning curve is way shorter when you already understand how the platform works in the real world. Having experience working in a real org as an end user is invaluable when you’re a beginner trying to learn Salesforce and pass the admin exam.
Most people learning Salesforce are staring at it for the first time, trying to imagine how a business would actually use it. You don’t have to imagine. You live it. That context is something a beginner spends weeks trying to wrap their head around, and you already have it in your back pocket.
So the leap from Salesforce end user to certified Salesforce admin is shorter for you than for almost anyone.
Does using Salesforce at work count as experience?
Yes. Using Salesforce as part of your job absolutely counts as real-world experience, and it’s genuinely valuable in interviews, even if your title isn’t “admin.” Employers love to hire candidates who’ve actually worked inside the platform.
You know what real users struggle with. You’ve seen what good (and bad) Salesforce setups look like in practice. You can talk about real scenarios instead of hypothetical ones. In a field where so many new candidates have a certification but no real hands-on job experience this can make you stand out as a job applicant.
If you’ve ever worried about the “certified but no experience” trap, good news — you’ve already sidestepped it. We talk about why experience beats a diploma in Do You Need a Degree to Become a Salesforce Admin?
What’s the difference between a Salesforce end user and a Salesforce admin?
A Salesforce end user is an employee of a company that uses Salesforce to manage their business and works on the employee-facing side of the org entering data, running reports, and managing their own records. A Salesforce admin might work for the same company customizing and running the back end of their Salesforce org, creating report layouts, controlling who can see them, and managing the whole system for everyone.
Think of it this way: as an end user, you drive the car. As an admin, you’re the one who customizes it, maintains it, and decides how it runs. Same vehicle, very different role. And a very different paycheck.
The good news is that you already know the car intimately from the driver’s seat. Now you just need to learn what’s under the hood.
Do you still need the certification?
Yes. Even with hands-on experience, you’ll still want the Salesforce Platform Administrator certification if you want to transition from an end user employee to a certified Salesforce admin. It formalizes what you know, proves it to employers, and fills in the admin-level skills you haven’t learned as an end user, like security and automations. The admin certification fills in those gaps and gives you the credential hiring managers look for.
The upside? Because you already grasp how it all works in practice, certification should be faster for you. We map the timeline for becoming a Salesforce Platform Administrator in How Long Does it Take to Become a Salesforce Admin?
How do you make the jump from Salesforce end user to Salesforce admin?
To move from end user to admin, get your Salesforce Platform Administrator certification, learn the admin-level skills you don’t use day to day, build a project (ideally solving a real problem from your own industry), and then pursue an internal move at your company.
Your Next Steps:
🎯 Earn your certification to formalize your skills. Learn the behind-the-scenes admin work — automation, security, data management — that end users don’t usually touch.
🎯 Build a project that solves a problem you’ve actually seen at your company. You already know what could be improved so be proactive and come up with solutions in a practice org.
🎯 Talk to the admin at your current company if there is one — offer to help, ask questions, and let them know you’re in the process of getting Salesforce certified. Sometimes the fastest path to an admin role is to join the Salesforce team at the company you’re already at.
How much more could you earn as a Salesforce admin?
Moving from an end-user role into a certified Salesforce Admin position commonly means earning $50,000–$70,000 a year to start according to LinkedIn.
For a lot of women, this is the best reason to become a Salesforce admin. You’re already doing Salesforce-adjacent work, probably for less than you’re worth. Stepping into the admin role is how you get paid what you’re worth.
