Hey, We’re
Nichole & Dylan!
How Long Does It Take to Become a Salesforce Admin?
You’ve decided a Salesforce career might be your next move. Now you want a real answer to the only question that matters when you’re juggling a job, a family, and zero spare time: how long does it take to become a Salesforce admin?
Here’s all the details, plus a week-by-week breakdown of exactly what to do and when, from your very first day of studying to the day you get hired. We did this ourselves, after much trial and error, so this is the realistic version, not the hype version.
By the end, you’ll have a clear timeline you can actually plan your life around.
How long does it take to become a Salesforce admin?
Most people become a certified Salesforce admin in three to six months. With lots of free time, you can get certified in two to three months if you really focus. If you’re working full-time, plan for four to six months.
That range exists for one simple reason: it depends on how many hours a week you can study. Someone with open mornings will move faster than someone squeezing in 30 minutes after the kids are asleep. Both will get there. One just takes a little longer.
The good news is that you set the pace. There’s no cohort to keep up with and no clock ticking against you.
How long does it take to get Salesforce certified vs. getting hired?
Getting certified can take anywhere from two to six months, depending on your schedule and how much time you are able to set aside each week for studying. Getting hired usually takes another two to three months after you pass the exam and earn your Salesforce Platform Administrator certification. During this time you’ll create your LinkedIn profile and resume, build hands-on projects to prove your experience, prep for interviews, and apply for jobs.
This distinction can be confusing, so let’s make it crystal clear. “Becoming a Salesforce admin” really means two milestones:
✨ Passing the certification exam — proving you have the skills.
✨ Landing the job — getting someone to pay you for them.
A realistic full picture looks like this: three months to learn the skills and pass the exam, then three months to build experience and get hired. That’s the six-month path most of our students follow.
Wondering whether you can pull this off without quitting your day job? You can! And we show you how in learn Salesforce while working full-time.
Can you get certified in less than three months?
Yes. If you can study 20–30 hours a week, you can realistically learn the skills and pass the Salesforce admin exam in 6–8 weeks. Unless you have some familiarity with Salesforce, though, you should take it slow and make sure you really understand the basic skills. The exam expects you to take those beginner skills and use many of them together to solve real-world business scenarios. So, spend time learning the skills and then additional time understanding how to connect the dots to solve problems. The exam is multiple-choice but some of the questions are quite complex.
Speed comes down to two things: hours available and study quality. Trailhead modules can be incomplete and it may be difficult to connect the dots when you’re new to Salesforce. This can slow you down (and make you want to bang your head against the wall). A structured Salesforce course that teaches the skills and connects the dots along the way can cut your time in half. That’s exactly why we built our Admin Accelerator course the way we did. After spending months feeling lost and confused in Trailhead.
But faster isn’t always better. If you rush through studying and then fail the exam, you’ve actually lost time. You’re making a career transition so think of it as a marathon, not a sprint, and pace yourself.
How long does it take to get hired?
After certification, a new admin should expect to land their first role within 10–12 weeks. This doesn’t happen without effort though. During those three months after certification, you need to take steps to make your LinkedIn profile, resume, and experience shine so that you can land interviews.
Certification opens the door, but your projects and networking get you through the door. The women who get hired the fastest aren’t the ones with the highest exam scores (no one actually cares what your exam score is, they just want to know that you’re certified). They’re the ones who can show what they built and talk about it with confidence.
Your week-by-week Salesforce “beginner to hired” timeline:
This is a six-month path but you can adjust it to fit your schedule:
Weeks 1–2: Configuration and Setup
- Set up your free Trailhead account and access the admin trail modules.
- Create a study routine you can stick to (consistency beats cramming).
- Do the modules in the Configuration and Setup section.
- Test yourself with practice quizzes before you move on to the next section.
Weeks 3-4: Object Manager and Lightning App Builder
- Do the modules in the Object Manager and Lightning App Builder section.
- Test yourself with practice quizzes before you move on to the next section.
Week 5: Sales and Marketing Applications
- Do the modules in the Sales and Marketing Applications section.
- Test yourself with practice quizzes before you move on to the next section.
- This week you should also start working on your LinkedIn profile and start building your network.
- Tap into the Salesforce Ohana (the friendliest community!) and connect with other Salesforce professionals.
Week 6: Service and Support Applications & Productivity and Collaboration
- Do the modules in the Service and Support Applications section.
- Test yourself with practice quizzes before you move on to the next section.
- Then do the modules in Productivity and Collaboration section.
Weeks 7-8: Data and Analytics Management
- Do the modules in the Data and Analytics Management section.
- Test yourself with practice quizzes before you move on to the next section.
Week 9: Automation

Congratulations! You’re done with learning the skills!
Weeks 11-12: Review for the exam
- Schedule your exam for the end of week 12.
- Review your notes and prepare for the exam.
- Take timed practice tests so you learn to pace yourself.
Week 12: Take (and pass!) the exam
Weeks 13-16: Build Projects and Get Experience
- Build one or two personal projects that demonstrate your skills.
- If you’ve had a career (or a job) in a specific industry, and you think you’d like to stay in that industry as a Salesforce admin, build a project that incorporates what you already know about that industry. Solve a problem that you know exists using your Salesforce org.
- Most projects take about an hour of planning and maybe 4 hours of actual building.
- Don’t get in your head about it.
Weeks 17-24: Search for Jobs
- Now that you’ve got some projects under your belt, it’s time to search for and apply for jobs.
- Create a winning resume, leverage your connections on LinkedIn to find job opportunities, and prepare for interviews.
- Apply for jobs on a regular basis.
Six months. Twenty-four weeks. A completely different paycheck on the other side.
What if life gets in the way?
You literally can’t fall behind because you are in charge of your schedule.
If you have a setback (because, you know, life) and get out of the study habit, just recommit to your goals, accept the reality that life gets in the way sometimes and readjust. Remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
The focused path is six months to a new career. If life gets in the way, give yourself six to twelve months. That’s still a short timeline to a career that offers you a better paycheck, health benefits, 401K, and paid time off.
Some weeks you’ll skate right through and everything just falls into place. Some weeks the kids get sick, work blows up, and you study zero minutes. Both are normal. The only real way to “fail” this is to quit entirely. As long as you keep coming back, you’ll end up where you want to be.
If you’re worried the material itself might be too tough, take a breath and read is Salesforce hard to learn. The short answer is that it’s far more learnable than you might think.
Your next step
You now have a realistic timeline and a week-by-week plan to follow. The only thing standing between you and that first Salesforce paycheck is getting started.
