What Does a Salesforce Admin Actually Do?
When we first heard about Salesforce jobs, we weren’t sure what an admin does all day. We pictured sitting in front of a computer, handling requests from the CEO, sales team and the company’s users (employees). And we weren’t far off.
We get asked a lot “What does a Salesforce admin do all day?” Do you sit in silence staring at code? (No.) Is it boring? (Also no.)
We’re pulling back the curtain to give you a behind-the-scenes look at what a Salesforce admin really does. The actual responsibilities, a realistic hour-by-hour day, and what the work feels like. By the end, you’ll have a good idea of what a Salesforce admin does all day and if it sounds like something you’d like to do too.
Let’s walk through it.
What does a Salesforce admin do?
A Salesforce admin customizes and manages a company’s Salesforce system. They build reports and dashboards, automate manual processes, manage users and security, keep data clean, and solve problems for the people who use Salesforce every day.
In plain English: you’re the person who makes Salesforce actually work for a business and the humans in it. When the sales team needs to see their numbers, you build the dashboard. When a process is eating everyone’s time, you automate it. When someone’s stuck, you’re the one they come to.
It’s a tech job. But a people-facing, problem-solving one. Not a sit-in-a-corner-and-code one.
What does a typical day as a Salesforce admin look like?
A typical day mixes building, fixing, and helping. An admin might start by handling user requests, spend focused time building a report or automation, join a meeting to understand what a team needs, and document their work. Usually from home, on a 9-to-5 schedule.
Here’s a realistic day, start to finish:
Morning. Get up and walk the dog, get dressed and eat breakfast, then open your laptop. The best part of a remote job is no commute. Most requests come via email, so you’re on email all day handling those. Requests can range from helping an employee who can’t log into the Salesforce org, to customizing a sales process, to building reports and dashboards to help the sales department track deals month to month. Handling these takes up most of your morning.
Mid-morning. Now for focused work. Cleaning data and keeping the org up to date, searching for duplicates, and setting up systems to prevent duplicate data from getting entered into the org. You build a dashboard of specific reports to help the CEO see deals in the pipeline. You pull the data, customize the report, and let him know when it’s ready. This is the satisfying, puzzle-solving part of the job.
Lunch. A real break. Maybe a walk, maybe lunch with your kids if you’re home. Your time is yours.
Afternoon. Hop on a quick zoom call with the marketing team. They’re struggling to manage several marketing outreaches, so you map out an automation that’ll save them hours every week. You start building the first version and ask them to test it this week before you refine it and make it live. Then you document what you did so future-you (and your team) isn’t guessing.
End of day. You wrap up, check for any emergency emails, and close the laptop at 5:00. Done. You spent your day solving real problems. And people thought you were a genius for it.
What are a Salesforce admin’s main responsibilities?
A Salesforce admin’s main responsibilities are building reports and dashboards, creating automations, managing users and permissions, maintaining data quality, customizing the platform, and supporting the people who use it. Every business is different so the admin’s duties might vary depending on the industry or business. But the skills an admin uses every day are pretty similar.
The day-to-day skills most admins use:
- Building reports and dashboards so the business can see what’s happening.
- Creating automations that take manual busywork off people’s plates.
- Managing users and security.
- Keeping data clean and organized so it’s actually reliable.
- Customizing the platform with new fields, layouts, and tools as the business changes.
- Supporting users when they’re confused or something isn’t working.
Not every day is the same, but most businesses have the same activities every day. So, once you get used to how your office works, you can settle into a nice routine and really use your skills to make things clearer and more efficient for the users, which is a big part of why the work stays interesting.
Is being a Salesforce admin boring?
No. Being a Salesforce admin is rarely boring. The mix of problem-solving, building, and helping people keeps the work varied, and there’s a real sense of satisfaction every time you solve something for your team.
This is one of the most common worries, so let’s put it to rest. The job isn’t repetitive data entry. It’s a steady stream of “how do I solve this?” puzzles, and the answer is different every time. People come to you with problems, you build something that fixes them, and you get to feel genuinely useful.
There’s a reason so many people leave teaching, nursing, and retail for this work. It’s engaging, you feel appreciated, and the Salesforce community (the Salesforce Ohana) is one of the most welcoming in all of tech.
Do Salesforce admins work alone or with other people?
Salesforce admins do a mix of both. You’ll have focused solo time for building and problem-solving, plus regular collaboration with the teams and users you support to understand what they need.
If you’re an introvert who loves a few hours of quiet building time, you’ll get that. If you like helping people and being the go-to problem-solver, you’ll get that too. It’s a nice balance. Heads-down work and meaningful interaction, without the constant noise of a customer-facing job.
Most of this happens from home, too. We covered just how remote-friendly the career is in can you really get a remote Salesforce job.
