What Is Salesforce? A Guide for Aspiring Salesforce Admins
You keep hearing that Salesforce is a great career. Remote work, good money, no coding, no degree. But there’s one slightly awkward problem: you’re not totally sure what Salesforce actually is.
Yeah, we didn’t know what it was either when we first heard about Salesforce jobs. You’re in exactly the right place. This is our easy-to-understand explanation of what Salesforce is, what it does, who uses it, and why so many women are building real careers around it. By the end, you’ll understand Salesforce well enough to explain it to your mom (or your skeptical bestie).
Salesforce is a customer relationship management (CRM) tool. It’s like software that helps businesses organize their data, track their customers, and automate the repetitive tasks that waste time. It’s the #1 CRM in the world and is used by over 150,000 companies.
What is Salesforce?
Picture it as the single system that a business uses to run its whole operation. It can see its customers, its sales, its customer service requests, and its data, all in one place. That’s Salesforce. Companies pay good money for it because when it’s set up well, it makes them more organized, more efficient, and more profitable.
And here’s the part that matters for you. Businesses need people to set up and run their Salesforce orgs. That someone is a Salesforce admin, and it could be you.
What is a CRM?
A CRM (customer relationship management) tool is software that stores and organizes everything a business knows about its customers, contacts, leads, purchases, deals, and history, in one central place.
Before CRMs, businesses kept this stuff scattered across spreadsheets, sticky notes, and someone’s memory (hello bouffant-haired secretary of indeterminate age). A CRM pulls it all together so nothing falls through the cracks. Salesforce is the biggest and most popular CRM out there, which is exactly why the demand for people who know it is so high.
What is a CRM used for?
Businesses use Salesforce to track customer data, manage sales and service, run reports, and automate manual work. Because it’s highly customizable, no two companies set it up the same way.
That customization is where the admin comes in.
Here are a couple of real examples:
Your local hair salon might use Salesforce to track the rent each stylist pays and the products they sell at the front desk. A university might use it to manage course enrollment, waitlists, and schedules. Same software, completely different setups, because their businesses are completely different.
The admin is the person who customizes Salesforce to fit each business, building the reports, automations, and layouts that make it actually useful.
Who uses Salesforce?
Over 150,000 companies use Salesforce, across nearly every industry. From retail and hospitality to tech, healthcare, finance, and nonprofits. There’s a Salesforce admin role for almost any background.
You’ll recognize a lot of the names: Walmart, Toyota, Amazon, Netflix, Nike, Sephora, Spotify, Hilton, L’Oréal, the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity. Big brands, small businesses, and charities all use Salesforce.
Why should that matter to you? Because it means job security and options. If you transition to a Salesforce career, you’re not betting your future on one company or one industry, you’re learning a skill that’s in demand in many industries.
Is Salesforce a sales job or a tech job?
Working as a Salesforce admin is a tech job, not a sales job. Don’t let the name fool you. You won’t be cold-calling anyone or hitting sales quotas. You’ll be building and/or managing your employers’ business data.
This confuses almost everyone at first, so you’re not alone. There are salespeople who work for the Salesforce company itself, selling the software to businesses. That’s not what we’re talking about. Once a business buys Salesforce, they need a trained admin to set it up, customize it, and run it day to day. That’s the Salesforce admin career.
It’s a technical role, but a friendly one. More problem-solving than programming.
Do you need to code to use Salesforce?
No. You do not need to know how to code or learn how to code to work as a Salesforce admin. The platform is built around clicks, not code. You configure it using menus and settings, not by writing software.
The skills that actually make a great admin are the ones you probably already have like listening, clear communication, and being a good problem-solver. The Salesforce-specific stuff takes about two to three months to learn and none of it requires a computer science brain.
Wondering how hard it is to learn Salesforce? It’s not hard. In fact, it’s totally do-able. Read our article Is Salesforce hard to learn?
So what does a Salesforce admin actually do?
A Salesforce admin customizes and manages a company’s Salesforce system. The admin builds reports and dashboards, automates processes, manages users, and solves problems for the people who use it every day.
In plain terms, the admin makes Salesforce work for the business and the humans working there. They build a dashboard so the sales team can see their numbers at a glance. They might set up an automation that saves everyone an hour of busywork. And they help users (employees) who lose their password. The admin gets paid well to be the person who knows how it all fits together.

Is Salesforce worth learning?
Yes. Salesforce is one of the most accessible, well-paid paths into tech in 2026, with entry-level salaries of $50,000–$70,000, mostly remote and hybrid roles, and no degree or coding required.
Ok, so now you know what Salesforce is, what it’s used for, and who’s hiring for it. The natural next question is how do I actually do this? — and that’s where we can help.
If you’re ready to see the full path from total beginner to certified and hired, our free guide lays it all out.
