How To Know When You’re Ready to Take the Salesforce Admin Exam?
This is the question that keeps aspiring admins up at night: am I actually ready? Wait too long and you stall out in endless studying. Jump too soon and you risk failing (and paying to retake it). So how do you know when it’s genuinely time to schedule the exam?
This post gives you the clear, measurable signs that you’re ready — no more guessing, no more second-guessing. We’ll cover the readiness signals that actually matter and the ones that don’t. We took this exam ourselves, so we know exactly what “ready” feels like (and what false confidence feels like too).
By the end, you’ll know whether it’s time to book your exam or study a little longer.
How Do You Know When You’re Ready to Take the Salesforce Admin Exam?
You’re ready to take the Salesforce Admin exam when you’re consistently scoring 80% or higher on timed practice exams and you can explain the core concepts out loud in plain English. Those two signals matter far more than how many weeks you’ve studied.
Readiness isn’t a gut feeling — it’s measurable. And that’s good news, because it means you don’t have to rely on nervous guessing. You can look at real evidence and make a confident call. Here’s what to look for.
Sign #1: You’re Consistently Scoring 80%+ on Practice Exams
The clearest readiness signal is your practice exam scores. When you’re regularly hitting 80% or higher on timed practice tests, you’ve built a comfortable cushion above the exam’s 68% passing score.
The word “consistently” matters here. One good score could be luck; several in a row is a pattern that shows real mastery. If your scores bounce around — 85% one day, 62% the next — you’re not quite there yet. Keep practicing until 80%+ is your reliable normal, not your occasional best day.
Sign #2: You Can Explain Concepts Out Loud
If you can explain a Salesforce concept in plain English — how sharing rules work, how to build a report, when to use a particular automation — you genuinely understand it. If you can only recognize the right answer on a multiple-choice quiz but couldn’t teach it, that’s a warning sign.
Try this: pick a topic and explain it out loud as if you’re teaching a friend. Where you stumble is where you still have gaps. This simple self-test catches the “I sort of know this” areas that trip people up on the real exam’s scenario questions.
Sign #3: You’re Comfortable With the Scenario Questions
The exam doesn’t ask “what does this button do?” — it gives you real-world business scenarios and asks for the best solution. You’re ready when those scenario-style questions feel manageable, not baffling.
If practice questions still feel like they’re written in a foreign language, spend more time on hands-on practice and applied learning. When you can read a scenario and reason your way to the most efficient answer, you’re thinking like the exam wants you to think.
Sign #4: Your Weak Sections Are Shored Up
By now you know which topics you find hardest — everyone has a couple. You’re ready when you’ve deliberately strengthened those weak spots instead of avoiding them.
Use your practice-exam results to spot patterns. If you keep missing automation questions, that’s where your remaining study time should go. Walking in with no glaring weak section — especially in the four heaviest-weighted topics — is a strong sign you’re prepared.
Sign #5: You Meet the Official Exam Guide Criteria
Salesforce publishes an official Exam Guide for the Administrator certification, and it spells out exactly what you’re expected to know in each of the eight sections. You’re ready when you can honestly check off those criteria.
Pull up the official exam guide and read through the objectives listed under each topic area. For every item, ask yourself: can I actually do this? If you can confidently say yes to the criteria across all eight sections — not just the ones you enjoy — that’s about as clear a green light as you’ll get. And if a few items make you go “wait, what’s that?”, you’ve just found exactly what to review before you schedule. Going straight to the source removes the guesswork about whether you’ve covered everything.
What Doesn’t Mean You’re Ready
Just as important: a few things feel like readiness but aren’t. Watch out for these false signals.
Finishing all your study material doesn’t mean you’re ready — completion isn’t the same as mastery. Studying for a certain number of weeks doesn’t mean you’re ready — time spent isn’t the measure, evidence is. And “feeling” ready (or feeling anxious) is unreliable in both directions; plenty of prepared people feel nervous, and plenty of underprepared people feel falsely confident. Trust the measurable signals over the emotional ones.
When in Doubt, Check Your Scores — Then Go
Here’s the honest truth: at some point you have to stop studying and take the test. If you’re consistently hitting 80%+, you can explain the concepts, and your weak spots are shored up — book the exam. Waiting for 100% certainty just costs you time (and delays your paycheck).
