How to Learn Salesforce in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
You’ve decided you want to learn Salesforce. Smart move. But the second you start looking into how, you hit a wall of scattered advice, a hundred open tabs, and a Trailhead dashboard that makes you feel like you need a translator. Where do you even begin?
Right here. This guide lays out the entire path to learning Salesforce from scratch. We’ll cover what to learn, which resources actually help, and how to avoid the mistakes that stall most beginners. We learned Salesforce ourselves as two non-techy real estate appraisers (after plenty of trial, error, and tears), so this is the clear, no-overwhelm version we wish we’d had.
By the end, you’ll know exactly how to go from total beginner to job-ready.
How to learn Salesforce as a beginner
To learn Salesforce as a beginner, set up a free practice account, learn the core admin skills, practice hands-on in your own org, and prepare for the certification exam. Most people can do this in a few focused months.
That’s the whole path in one sentence. The trick to learning Salesforce isn’t finding the information. There’s plenty of it on the internet, free and paid. The trick is learning how to combine all the skills you learn to solve real-world business problems. The Salesforce Platform Administrator exam tests you on knowing how to do this.
Here’s the path at a glance:
- Get set up with the free tools
- Learn the core skills in sequence
- Practice hands-on in a real org
- Prepare for and pass the certification exam
Let’s walk through each step, plus the study strategy that ties it all together.
Step 1: Get Set Up With the Right Tools
Before you learn a single skill, you need somewhere to learn it.
Start with a free Trailhead account. Trailhead is Salesforce’s official online learning platform. Once you create your Trailhead account, you’ll want to set up a free practice org (sometimes called a “playground” or Developer org), which is your own personal Salesforce environment to practice your skills without breaking anything important.
This setup is easy to get started. It’s important to understand that you learn Salesforce by doing, not just watching. Having a practice playground means every concept you learn, you can immediately get hands-on with.
Step 2: Learn the Core Skills
The Salesforce Platform Administrator certification exam covers eight topic areas. You need to learn the skills in all 8 topic sections. But on the admin exam, they’re not all equally weighted. The four most heavily tested sections are Configuration & Setup, Object Manager & Lightning App Builder, Data & Analytics Management, and Automation. You should focus your study time on mastering the skills in those sections. The exam questions from those 4 sections account for 62% of your exam score.
If you’re wondering how difficult it is to learn the skills and pass the exam, we answered that honestly in Is Salesforce Hard to Learn. The short answer is that it’s far more learnable than it looks.
Step 3: Practice Hands-On in a Real Org
Reading a lesson about building a report is not the same as building one. This is the step people skip, and it hurts them on the exam.
As you learn each skill, go build it in your practice org. Learning about automation? Create an actual flow. Learning about reports and dashboards? Build a few. When you can do something with your own hands, and explain it to yourself or someone else, then you truly know it. (Being able to teach a concept is one of the best signs you’re ready to be tested on it.)
This hands-on practice is also what gives you something to show later. The projects you build while learning become portfolio pieces when you start applying for jobs.
Step 4: Prepare For and Pass the Certification Exam
Once you’ve learned and practiced the core skills, it’s time to get exam-ready. Passing the Salesforce Platform Administrator exam is what turns your skills into a certification employers recognize.
A few essentials to know about the exam: the passing score is 68%, it’s multiple-choice, and it tests your ability to apply multiple skills to real-world business scenarios. Don’t just memorize features. That’s why the hands-on practice in Step 3 matters so much. Take timed and untimed practice exams, reviewing every question you miss until you’re consistently scoring 80% or higher.
We break down the full week-by-week timeline for all of this in How Long Does It Take to Become a Salesforce Admin.
What’s the best way to learn Salesforce?
The best way to learn Salesforce is with a structured approach that combines learning and hands-on practice, rather than jumping around to random free resources. Structure is what turns scattered effort into real progress.
This is the single biggest lesson from our own journey. When we started, we did all the free stuff — Trailhead modules, YouTube videos, paid courses — but we learned everything out of order, never connected the dots, and failed the exam twice. The information wasn’t the problem. The lack of an overall learning structure was.
You have two real paths to that structure. You can build it yourself for free (totally possible, just slower and easier to get lost), or you can follow a structured program that hands you the sequence. We cover the pros and cons of each in Can You Learn Salesforce for Free and Trailhead vs. a Paid Course.
How long does it take to learn Salesforce?
Most people learn the core Salesforce skills in two to three months of consistent study, and reach certification in three to six months depending on how many hours a week they can commit.
Speed comes down to two things: how much time you have, and how organized your learning is. A structured path can roughly cut your study time in half compared to piecing it together from scattered resources. And you can absolutely do this around a full-time job, school, and family responsibilities.
Do you need to pay to learn Salesforce?
No. You can learn Salesforce for free using Trailhead and other free resources. Paying for a course isn’t required. It mainly buys you structure, support, and speed, which help you avoid the overwhelm and confusion that stalls a lot of self-taught beginners.
Free learning works, and we’d never tell you otherwise. The question isn’t “free vs. paid” — it’s “how much is your time and momentum worth?” Some people thrive teaching themselves. Others burn out from the disorganization and quit. Knowing which type you are can inform your decision to DIY your learning path or join a structured course.
How to stay consistent
Here’s the truth nobody puts in the study guides: the hardest part of learning Salesforce isn’t the material. It’s sticking with it week after week when life gets busy and your motivation dips.
Keeping to a consistent study plan can be easy if you choose a study time that works for you on a regular basis and you commit to it like an appointment you can’t miss. Make study time a habit, not a decision you have to make every day. Track your progress so you can see yourself moving forward. Build a plan that’s easy to follow so you always know what your next step is. And when motivation fades, because it will, lean on a reason bigger than the exam. We go deeper on both in How to Create a Study Plan That Actually Works and How to Stay Motivated While Studying.
And if you decide to DIY your Salesforce learning journey, watch out for the Most Common Mistakes Beginners Make.
Your next step
Learning Salesforce isn’t complicated once you can see the whole path. Get set up, learn the skills, go deep on the heavily tested topics, and pass the exam.
If you want that entire path on a single page — the five phases, roughly how long each takes, and how to know you’re ready to move to the next one — we made you a free roadmap.
👉👉 Download the Salesforce Certification Roadmap. It’s the at-a-glance checklist that shows you exactly where to start and what comes next, so you never feel lost again.
You’ve got the map now. That already puts you ahead of most people who never get past the overwhelm. Take one focused step at a time. You can totally do this.
